When I was down in Fiji as part of my People to People experience, I was walking the beach when a native came up to me asking me the simple question "You wanna see a feesh?" And of course I said yes, my face lighting up at the opportunity to see what and how the locals caught their fish. He brought me to his boat where two others were sorting through their daily catch of squid, jack, grouper, parrot fish, among others that I could not name. He nodded to me and asked again. "See a Feesh?" I was ready to tell him that he had an impressive catch of fish when he got his buddies to help him haul his "fish" out of the keel of the boat. A Hawkbilled turtle. I was surprised by their catch and they were proud to show it off. It was a beautiful turtle and I knew it was heading to feed several families, its left over shell polished and either used as a bowl or more likely sold for much needed money. But still I smiled, enjoying their pride and sense of accomplishment at their impressive haul. I snapped some photos of them, they were only too willing and excited to pose, wanting to see the pictures in my screen afterward. Sometimes it's better to protect an indigenous way of life than it is to tell them they can no longer live as they have for centuries. There is a fine line of balance between saving nature and saving culture; nature can be brought back from the brink, but culture can be lost quicker and forever.
